Something up with google or wordpress?

By , Friday 22nd February 2013 7:08 pm

I noticed something very strange in google results whilst searching for referenes to online today.  After the usual links to github, the site itself, and some various small references I noticed the following in the results:

I checked several of these links fearing my site had been hacked and it turns out none of the pages exist. There’s also no reference to them in the admin section of the site or from grepping site logs.  The posts seem to have been posted over the past few weeks according to google.

Have google search results been hacked/tricked? Or is there something else going on with my wordpress install? Currently running wordpress 3.5.1.

Clearly google did see something at some point:

  1. Ok, looks like I’d been hit by a wordpress attack.

The hack was set up to only be visible to googlebot crawls of the site. I checked the data using google webmaster tools to pull a copy of a spam page. Earlier this evening I was still seeing spam pages existing.

I seem to have cleared up the issues. I did this by…

Using webmaster tools to crawl a spam page shows a 404 being returned so it looks like I’m out of the woods for now, but will be keeping an eye out for this in future.

  2. Installing the ‘wordfence’ plugin also found additional attack files e.g. wp-includes/js/tinymce/wp-mce-helps.php which I’ve now removed. This might be a useful plugin to install
